Workshops for schools

Many schools are using digital technologies like the internet, laptops, and tablets to connect students quickly, easily, and cost-effectively with a huge range of services and resources. All schools want a safe digital environment. This course is developed for guidance to help schools achieve this.

This course provides principals and teachers with the information to act confidently and in the best interests of students regarding digital technology.

Issues that will be addressed during this presentation:

  1. What is internet addiction, and how can we discern when there is problematic internet use?
  2. What exactly is social media and how is it affecting our mental health?
  3. How can a person be addicted to social media?
  4. The phenomenon of Selfies and unsocial behaviour.
  5. What is cyber bullying. How is this misbehaviour on the interned addressed, and stopped?
  6. What does the law say about harassment online, and can a child be held liable?
  7. Cyber pornography, naked pictures, sex texting and the results thereof.
  8. How to protect myself against criminals online.
  9. Gaming addiction
  10. How to prevent problematic internet use
  11. How to deal with the consequences of the above mentioned.

Possible solutions:

  1. How can the schools be more involved?
  2. Training teachers to identify possible overuse of screens, how to recognize the problem, and how to give help and assistance.
  3. Teach children about these dangers, and how it is affecting their mental health.
  4. How can the parent be involved?
  5. Preventative and coping strategies.
  6. What does the law say?
  7. Possible counselling where necessary.

Training to be done in three separate sessions:

  1. Teacher
  2. Pupil
  3. Parent

Each session is roughly about 1h 30min, depending on the questions. It is recommended that the juniors and seniors be scheduled in 2 separate sessions.

According to my experience the grade R group is still too young to sit still and concentrate for so long. I do not recommend including the grade R group in a session, unless there are specific problems due to overuse of screens. The final decision is with the school.

We can provide a colour-in book and short story about the hidden dangers of unsupervised screen time for young children. This is recommended for grade R group.

Format

Power point presentation with pictures, relevant information for each target group and video.
